The Fish & Bull

This identity concept was developed for a gastro pub project inspired by traditional Irish symbolism and old-world pub aesthetics.

The branding drew influence from the iconic animal imagery found on historic Irish coinage, particularly the salmon and bull illustrations originally created by Percy Metcalfe.

The choice of imagery was intended as a nod to locally sourced Irish produce — fittingly, one of the original reasons these animals were selected for Irish coin design in the first place. Research into the original artwork and its historical references became an important part of the creative process, helping shape a visual identity rooted in Irish heritage while avoiding a nostalgic or overly traditional approach.

The salmon and bull illustrations were completely redrawn by hand in Adobe Illustrator before being individually painted, textured and rendered in Adobe Photoshop to create a rich oxidised finish and engraved appearance.

The final identity combined custom illustration, typography and texture work to create a distinctive and character-driven brand concept.
